Karl Heideck Leads Philadelphia Employment Law

Karl Heideck Leads Philadelphia Employment Law
Karl Heideck Leads Philadelphia Employment Law

Philadelphia now has one more thing that sets it apart. On January 23, 2017, Philadelphia became the first city in the United States to prohibit private employers from asking about a prospective employee’s salary history. Lawmakers say that the law might help women earn a fair wage in the city.

Even if a business finds information about a perspective employee’s salary history on their own, they’re not allowed to use the information without the person’s permission. They also can’t ask applicants to volunteer information about their salary history or even require it as a condition of employment. Violators can receive fines of up to $2,000.

Not everyone loves the changes, and the city has to fend off legal challenges to the law. Employers say that it’s unfair to apply the language to anyone who does business in the city even if they’re headquartered in another location. They also say the law violates constitutional protections for freedom of speech. Critics also say that employers have other ways to size up their candidates such as reviewing a candidate’s residential history in order to estimate their income.

The law is on hold for now until the courts sort out the legal challenges. The Chamber of Commerce filed a court action to stop the law. The city responded by saying that there’s no proof that the measure is going to hurt business. They challenged the Chamber of Commerce to identify any business that actually relies on the salary information in their hiring practices.

Adam Milstein Brings Attention to BDS Groups

Sadly, it’s no surprise that there are still hundreds of hate-groups preventing society from moving forward. What might be surprising is how effective these groups work to achieve their hateful goals. The hate acts against Jewish students on college campuses across America is still an ongoing battle.

Adam Milstein, co-founder of the Adam and Gila Milstein Family Foundation and proud speaker of pro-Israel advocacy, often writes articles about the struggles of Jewish-Americans. Recently, he brought BDS (Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions) groups to everyone’s attention. The groups are founded for the sole purpose of harassing and intimidating Jewish students.

There are stories involving these groups trying to block a Jewish student’s participation in her school’s student government’s Judicial Board. Another story describes one student’s harassment during student elections because of her open support for Israel. These groups openly taunt and degrade visiting foreign ministers and some even physically assault Jewish students and AEPI Houses.

One of the most frightening aspects of these groups is the sheer size and capacity of the overall organization. It’s mind-boggling who nationally coordinated these groups are. They’re also well-funded and professionally organized. All over the country, they stage anti-Israel events and demonstrations the specifically attack progressive movements pro-Israel activists.

The most shocking members of BDS groups are the professional agitators that run many of the on-campus groups. These leaders are usually paid doctoral students who live on campus for free for decades at a time. Their sole purpose is running anti-Israel campaigns and local Student for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapters.

Adam Milstein wants people to understand the slanted disadvantage Jewish-Americans face. Fortunately, over the years, many groups rose to combat the targeted hate. Many of Adam’s partner organizations and SSI (Students Supporting Israel) groups are beating back the hate.

As for Adam Milstien, he continues focusing on providing philanthropic services to as many pro-Israel organizations as he can. The Milstein Family Foundation believes in helping any group trying to strengthen the Jewish people, their heritage, and the State of Israel.

Preventative Healthcare with Life Line Screening

Life Line Screening targets several major areas of the body. The screenings look closely at the major arteries running through the body: the carotid artery running through the neck leading to the brain, the abdominal aorta from the heart through the chest to the limbs and the peripheral arteries leading to the head, organs and limbs. The screenings check for blockages or plaque buildup in the veins and more information click here.

The carotid artery screening is an ultrasound that looks for blockages in the two arteries running from the heart through the neck to the head. This screening is referred to as the stroke/carotid artery disease screening. This disease is characterized by a blockage within the arteries in the neck which stops blood flow to the brain commonly referred to as a stroke.

A Doppler ultrasound bounces high-frequency sound waves off circulating red blood cells thus producing images of the flow of blood in the veins. This non-invasive test takes a few minutes to perform and is conducted by pressing the ultrasound device against the neck. The images are then projected onto a screen for the ultrasound technician to see and any abnormalities can then be spotted by the doctor when he or she examines the results and learn more about Lifeline Screening.

There are often no prior symptoms of carotid artery disease. Many times, the condition is discovered after the patient experiences a mini stroke or a transient ischemic attack. Many doctors will use their stethoscope to listen for the whooshing sound that indicates an obstruction of blood flow through the neck, but this is not entirely conclusive. The symptoms that might suggest a problem would be symptoms of a stroke such as numbness of the face and limbs, severe headache, vision trouble, dizziness and difficulty speaking and Lifeline Screening’s lacrosse camp.

If the results of the ultrasound indicate that there is a blockage, the medical procedures are a carotid endarterectomy and carotid artery angioplasty and stenting are used to treat carotid artery disease. The carotid endarterectomy is an incision in the neck reaching the carotid artery, a second incision is made into the blocked part of the artery and the inner lining of the artery is removed. The carotid endarterectomy is typically used for carotid arteries that are blocked by at least 50 percent. Carotid artery angioplasty and stenting widens the arteries by threading a deflated balloon into it and then inflated it before a stent is placed in the artery for support. This prevents the artery from narrowing.

The stroke/carotid artery disease screening can reveal the potential for a stroke before it happens. Lifestyle changes could then eliminate the problem before it has to be treated with medical interventions: quit smoking, exercise, eat healthier, drink alcohol in moderation, lose weight, monitor blood pressure and reduce stress. With a Life Line Screening you could have a healthy long life. Without one, you may suffer and have a life with health concerns or even experience an early death.

Dr. Cameron Clokie’s Pursuit of A Cost Effective BMP Solution

Dr. Cameron Clokie has a problem. He needs a certain protein to help regenerate bone issue. Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) was first discovered in the 1950’s by Marshall Urist. BMP promotes growth in the long bones of the body (the arms and legs) and to combat bone loss around the teeth. Recently the protein has also been used to fuse the spine. Future uses of BMP are the stuff of science fiction.

The problem is the protein is in short supply in the human body. Dr. Clokie had to grind the bones of some forty cadavers to get three milligrams for one reconstructive jaw surgery. By working with a biotech company, Dr. Clokie developed a method to get BMP from hamsters. Clokie is now working on inserting the human gene responsible for BMP into goats. The plan is that the protein can then be harvested from their milk. This method would be less expensive and far more sustainable than any other known option.

The reconstruction of bones has been an interest of Clokie for much of his long career. After graduation from St.George’s College, in Toronto, Ontario, Cameron Clokie received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from McGill University in Montreal. In 1990 Clokie received his diploma in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and began post-graduate work at McGill. When offered the opportunity, Clokie accepted a Research Fellowship at UCLA’s Bone Research Laboratory in 1997. There he participated in the research led by Dr, Urist which led to the discovery not only of BMP, but several other bone growth proteins.

Dr. Clokie’s research has been creative, yet he remains a staunch supporter of evidence-based outcomes. His use of a fundamental applied laboratory approach has allowed him to find solutions that have helped over 100,000 patients. Clokie has many patented products, processes, and techniques to his credit. He has also published hundreds of peer reviewed papers on Bloomberg.com. Clokie is a highly sought-after physician and lecturer.

As a professor, Clokie takes a holistic approach to teaching his students. He believes that real surgical skills come from understanding the underlying disease processes. He is a strong proponent of introducing his students to other medical and surgical disciplines. This helps to forge a collaborative relationship that enhances patient care and outcomes. Continuing education, Clokie believes, never stops. He has worked hard at developing programs for the University of Toronto for specialists as well as general practitioners.

Some of Dr. Clokie’s other research projects includes better use of hard tissue laser technology in surgical applications. He is also interested in all aspects of regenerative medicine.

Clokie realized that BMP is prohibitively expensive for many patients. One cited example was a patient paying around $6,000 for its uses in his treatment. As an experimental procedure, insurance did not cover any of that cost. Making such treatments affordable is an example of Clokie’s desire to provide an effective path for technology transfer from the university to the medical community.
